Emily Dunbar on Lyrical Venus Radio! Tues 12/1

Singer-Songwriter Emily Dunbar

Singer-Songwriter Emily Dunbar

I met Emily Dunbar two years ago at Rocky Mountain Song School. The first song I heard her play was her one called John Cusack and I loved how it was kinda quirky, kinda sweet and that she played a little accordian for it! Plus we were wearing the same hoop earrings. :)

All of that was enough to catch my attention, and then we took a writing class together with Melissa Ferrick. Melissa gave us the word “rock” and we were all supposed to create a word map from that. Mine ended up being kind of vague and nothing really ever came of it, but Emily somehow came up with this fabulous start of song about gold lamé – a girl leaving her hometown for the thin sheen of glitz and glitter that covers Las Vegas and finding it kind of empty. Melissa was really impressed and told Emily to send a copy when she finished the song because she would give it to a few people she knew in Nashville.

I got to hear a more finished version of the song before we left for home that year, but I was overjoyed to find out she had finally made an album including those songs I first heard around the song circles and wanted to hear again! As it says in the album description, Catch It When You Can “… is slick enough for the big time, but homespun enough to imagine Dunbar strumming just for you from across the room.”

The first time I put the CD in my car, I had chills and was teary from the first chorus of the first song, Barcelona. There was just so much love and sweetness in those few lines. I´ve heard from a few songwriting teachers that you know a song is good if it gives you goosebumps. Catch It When You Can definitely passes the test for me!

You can find out more about Emily´s music on her blog (I would have added some of her YouTube videos except I´m in Peru and this internet cafe won´t let me, so you´ll have to find them on your own on her site): http://emilydunbar.blogspot.com/
