10 Questions with Kathleen Taylor Plus Lyrical Venus Radio Tues 9am!

Singer-Songwriter Kathleen Taylor

Singer-Songwriter Kathleen Taylor

OK, this week we get a super double bonus, a blog AND radio interview from Austin-based singer-songwriter Kathleen Taylor!

If I had to pick just two words to describe Kathleen’s latest album Defy the World I would probably choose ‘adorable’ and ‘quirky’.  It’s more than that of course.  The bio on her website encourages you to “Think an Art Noveau princess with a pair of brass knuckles”.  I think that works pretty well.  A sound that’s a touch vintage romantic with a bit of punch to it.   A little twangy, jangly, crunchy and sweet.  Like a Granny Smith apple.  Or maybe a hot strawberry pie on a windowsill with a yellow gingham curtain fluttering in the breeze.  Or even a freshly picked tomato, still warm from the garden sunshine!

If I just made you hungry with all those food comparisons, well, I can’t send any of them through the computer screen to you, but how about  a peace offering  of a little snack for your eyes and ears instead ?  This video for the song Gainesville Today should give you a true taste (I couldn’t help it!) of Kathleen’s musical stylings:

Feed and email readers may need to come to the blog to see the video

See, I told you it was tasty!  If you want more, join me on Tuesday March 3rd on the Lyrical Venus Radio Hour from 9-10 am Central for a live interview with Kathleen and to hear some more of her songs.  You can also check out her website and MySpace page to read, see and hear more.  You can even get a copy of Defy the World for your very own self!

And now for the blog interview I promised at the beginning of this post!  At first we thought we might not be able to do a radio interview, so Kathleen answered 10 questions by email, here they are:

1. Where is your favorite place to sing?

On my living room couch (tee-hee) I really love to play at a local venue called Austin Java!

2. What are you most proud of on this new album?

I am super proud of the collaboration of all the wonderful musicians and the producer of this album. I had such a fun time making “Defy The World” and I met lots of fantastic people!

3. What’s the one thing you can’t leave for a tour without?

My guitar and my comfy pajamas!

4. What are your 3 most played tracks on your iPod? (or, What music are you listening to these days?)

Lately, I’m listening to The Be Good Tanyas, Gillian Welsh, Christopher Lawrence, Johnny Cash, Nick Drake, Donovan, Gogol Bordello, Townes Van Zandt, Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, and Vladimir Vysotsky…

5. Do you get most of your inspiration for your songs from your own life or other people’s stories or both?

Yikes! Hard for me to answer…both I think….The Muse works in strange ways :) One time, I dreamt the lyrics/music for my song, “Brilliant Afternoon,” at night and wrote them down the next morning…definitely a magical wonderful experience for me :)

7. How many instruments do you play and what are they?

I play two instruments: the banjo and the guitar

8. Let’s say you just won a big award for your music at a red carpet event – who do you thank in your acceptance speech?

Golly….definitely my fiancee, Andy…he has been more supportive than I can express…and my mom, friends and family

9. If you could pick 5 or 6 people, (living or dead) to be in a super band, who would you pick and what would they play?

Animal from the Muppets on Drums
Will Landin on Tuba
Tom Nelly on Lead guitar
Eugene Hutz on whatever he wanted to play!
Vince Giraldi on piano!
Kullen Fuchs on horns and accordion and melodium….
Kim Deschamps on pedal steel and dobro
Jerry Garcia on banjo
David Grisman on mandolin
Vasser Clements on fiddle…
Michael Hymes on bass
Jeff Johnston on Saw

I could keep going! Some of those folks I listed, played on my album…I was so lucky to get the the amazing caliber of musicians that played on Defy The World!

10. And the big question I’m asking everybody these days is: What’s your favorite sandwich?

This winter, I’ve been really enjoying grilled cheese sandwiches… :)

There you have it folks!  10 questions with Kathleen Taylor!   Tune in Tuesday from 9-10 am for the radio interview with Kathleen, plus other great songs by female singer-songwriters!   100.1 FM here in town, kruufm.com on the world wide web!

Great interview! Not your typical everyday journalist “what inspired you” questions, but really fun, out of the ordinary things people want to know but never ask!
